# Whitespace

Outside of Liquid statements, all whitespace is preserved. This can result in whitespace that is unwieldy (for example, while formatting GraphQL queries).

To avoid this, use hyphens just inside of Liquid statement openings and closings, as in the following:

* `{{- eats_whitespace_on_the_left }}`
* `{%- assign eats_whitespace_on_the_left = true %}`
* `{{ eats_whitespace_on_the_right -}}`
* `{% assign eats_whitespace_on_the_right = true -%}`
* `{{- eats_whitespace_on_both_sides -}}`
* `{%- assign eats_whitespace_on_both_sides -%}`

{% hint style="info" %}

{% endhint %}

## Example

```liquid
{%- capture message -%}
  This is a message.
{%- endcapture -%}
{% capture message -%}
  This is a message.
{% endcapture -%}
{{- customer.name -}}
{{ customer.name -}}
{{- customer.name }}
```

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter:

```
GET https://learn.mechanic.dev/platform/liquid/basics/whitespace.md?ask=<question>
```

The question should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
